The Napa County Sheriff's Office today positively identified a 57-year-old woman who was found on state Highway 29 early Sunday morning, but is not releasing her name until her family is notified, a sheriff's captain said.

The woman was found injured in the southbound lane in the 4100 block of Highway 29 near Old Lawley Toll Road in rural Napa County around 4:45 a.m. Sunday, sheriff's Capt. Doug Pike said.

She died while being flown to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and an autopsy was scheduled for this afternoon, Pike said.

It was initially believed the woman was the victim of a hit-and-run accident, but her death is now considered a possible homicide, according to the sheriff's office.

The area has few pedestrians and investigators did not find a vehicle at the scene, Pike said.

The California Highway Patrol issued a Sig-alert around 6:30 a.m. and closed the highway in both directions between Tubbs Lane and Robert Louis Stevenson State Park. The road reopened around 4:50 p.m.

Emergency responders from the Calistoga Fire Department, Napa County Fire Department and Cal Fire also responded to the incident.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Napa County sheriff's Detective Chris Pacheco at (707) 253-4591.
